I have to admit my main mobile and/or smartphone is the Blackberry Q5.

For business you cannot beat a Blackberry keyboard for text messaging and emails. I don’t know what it is, but, I am challenged when it comes to messaging on a touch screen.

I know this may seem a bit of a stretch, I’m convinced Dino the 14 year German Short-Haired Pointer and my cherished friend is capable of doing better on a touch screen.

My backup phone is the Google Nexus 5.

Should I call it a backup phone? No! Absolutely Not!

The only reason the Nexus 5 is a backup is because of the touch-screen for text, email etc., otherwise it would be my main phone. Sorry, but I am totally inept with the touch-screen.

Why the Nexus 5 ?

Fast Snapdragon processor, excellent call quality, lots of ram and a large screen with excellent graphics = VALUE!

Not the best just the best value.

That’s right, I believe in getting value for your hard earned money. I want the best for less, who doesn’t?

As well, there are No (none, nada) Blackberry apps for Synology and quite frankly the screen real estate on the Q5 is limited.

Yes “Scarlet”, It’s about the screen size and you are my witness when I say it’s limited.

I have had a Blackberry pretty much from the get go and for me business is a priority. But, have had to hedge my bets and so here I am Android.

Synology has iOS apps for the iPhone which work in a similar manner, or, as well as Android, but, I have a confession to make; Yikes! I’m anti Apple. DS – 713+

Just something about Apple I can not get my head around and refuse to go there.

Actually there is logical reasoning on my part for not using Apple’s technology and it is not because their technology is lacking.

Make no mistake about it, Apple is a technology leader of the highest regard.

My issues with Apple predate the iPhone. This was when I needed software applications for business and a PC based platform was my only option at that time.

Also, I like the open source platform “Android” that Google has made available to the competition which further aligns with my personal preferences.

It’s all about the ability to choose and to be able to exercise it at will.

That being said I fully embrace freedom of choice and if the iPhone is your phone of preference I can respect that.

So, the Google Nexus 5 gives tremendous value for the money.

And, Synology has Android /iOS apps that facilitates the abilities of the Synology DiskStation to act as your own Personal Cloud to access files, audio and video on the go. DS – 713+

DS Audio

Price: Free
Platform: iOS, Android
Developer: Synology

DS Audio allows you to stream music stored on your DS-713+ on your iOS or Android device, providing, you have an internet or WiFi connection available.

This is an app I use a lot while on the road. The app works very well for me streaming quality content.

You can browse music by either, Recently Added, Folders, Artists, Composers, Genre or Albums.

I have a lot of professional development material stored on the DS-713+. DS Audio allows me to access audio content in an exemplary manner while I’m on the move.

When I use WiFi on the Nexus 5 it gets much better, basically instantaneous due to buffering bandwidth not limited by the cellular network.

DS Video

DS Video on your iOS and Android devices allows you to watch all movies, your favourite TV shows, and recorded TV shows on the DiskStation DS-713+.

Price: Free
Platform: iOS, Android
Developer: Synology

I’ve only been able to stream movies on the Nexus 5 via WiFi on my home network and it works very well.

Unfortunately, I have not been able to stream over the cellular network. This is over http: and https:, just not happening at this stage for me.

As I said above there are no issues streaming video over WiFi and I was quite surprised at how good it is.

You see, I could never understand watching a tv show or movie on a 4″ inch screen. I thought people were nuts but “wow” it’s actually very good!

I’m at a stage where the odometer readout of my eyes requires I need to treat them with extra care.

Vision is still 20/20 but that small print is a challenge under certain lighting. So, I’ll save the 4″ inch video for the slightly younger generation.

Darn well wish this was around when I was more able to appreciate this technology.

Why No 4G video?

Not sure if it’s a bandwidth problem with my cell provider or a closed port on their side. When I sort this out I’ll update with the fix.

DS Cloud

DS Cloud is your “Personal Cloud Station” for your mobile device. You pick the DiskStation folders you want to synchronize with your mobile device and make them available for offline viewing.

You have complete and total control over synchronization criteria. For each folder select the maximum file size and type of file you choose to synchronize.

This is another app that works very well for me, sounding repetitive? It automatically updates my file access and syncs immediately on the Nexus 5 each time I add a new file directly to the DS713.
